“The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Ingredients in Skincare (and other body products)”
When I first started using the YUKA app I didn't realise how fantastic it would be to find exactly what was in my skincare products. Our skin in our largest organ right so what we consume can be toxic or not. Armed with a simple bit of knowledge we can be more mindful and look great for it.
So having that in hand and some Good Bad and Ugly tips may help you too. Here's the Joose I have for you.
The Good
1. Hyaluronic Acid
A natural humectant that attracts and retains moisture, keeping skin hydrated and plump. Ideal for maintaining a youthful appearance.
2. Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid)
A potent antioxidant that brightens skin, reduces hyperpigmentation, and boosts collagen production for smoother, firmer skin.
3. Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)
Known for balancing oil production, reducing redness, and improving skin texture. It strengthens the skin barrier and helps minimize pores.
4. Ceramides
Essential lipids that fortify the skin’s barrier, preventing moisture loss and protecting against environmental damage and dryness.
5. Peptide
These amino acid chains stimulate collagen production, resulting in firmer, more youthful skin with reduced fine lines and wrinkles.
6. Retinol (Vitamin A)
An anti-aging powerhouse that increases cell turnover, improving skin tone and texture while reducing the appearance of fine lines.
The Bad
1. Parabens
Synthetic preservatives that have been linked to hormone disruption and skin irritation. Commonly found in many skincare products.
2. Sulfates (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate)
Harsh cleansing agents that can strip natural oils from the skin, leading to dryness, irritation, and possible breakouts.
3. Synthetic Fragrances
Often contain a mix of undisclosed chemicals that can trigger allergic reactions, cause skin irritation, or lead to long-term sensitivity.
4. Alcohol (Denatured or Ethanol)
Found in many toners and astringents, alcohol can excessively dry out the skin, disrupt the skin barrier, and worsen conditions like acne.
5. Silicones
Provides a temporary smoothing effect but can clog pores and cause long-term skin congestion and dullness.
6. Chemical Sunscreens (Oxybenzone, Octinoxate)
May cause skin irritation, are linked to hormone disruption, and have been shown to damage coral reefs and marine life.
The Ugly
1. Phthalates
Common in synthetic fragrances, phthalates are linked to hormone disruption, reproductive issues, and environmental toxicity.
2. Formaldehyde-Releasing Agents
Preservatives that release formaldehyde, a carcinogen that can cause skin sensitivity and allergic reactions.
3. Mineral Oil
Derived from petroleum, it can clog pores, hinder skin respiration, and lead to breakouts, offering minimal skin benefits.
4. Hydroquinone
A controversial skin-lightening agent linked to cancer risk and severe skin irritation. Banned in many countries due to its toxicity.
5. Toluene
Found in nail treatments and some cosmetics, it’s linked to skin irritation, dizziness, and long-term damage to the respiratory and nervous systems.
6. Triclosan
An antimicrobial agent that can cause hormone disruption, antibiotic resistance, and environmental harm by persisting in ecosystems.
