The next, it’s a full-on circus act: you’ve got a child bouncing off the walls (literally), deadlines slipping away like a greased watermelon, and your own stress levels reaching a new personal best. Recently I have been talking with mums about this very thing and honestly my heart goes out to any family struggling in this reality.

Struggling to keep attention on homework or even on a simple conversation? Peppermint’s cooling, invigorating aroma helps sharpen focus and mental clarity. You know that feeling when you take a deep breath and suddenly the fog lifts? That’s peppermint working its magic. You could diffuse it in your living room, or better yet, place a drop on a cotton ball and pop it into your kiddo’s backpack for when things start to drift off course. Test it out to see how they like it too if they are sensory. I always suggest slowly slowly particularly with kids. Once they find a smell they love though you will find they quickly adapt to using it the right way too.

Lavender – The Stress-Reducer 🌸
Lavender isn’t just for your grandma’s sachets – it’s a family essential. Whether it’s soothing bedtime routines or calming the chaos of a busy morning, a few drops of lavender can help reduce stress and promote relaxation. Bonus points: it works wonders on YOU too. (Imagine not having to hide in the pantry with a tub of ice cream just to catch your breath… ahhh, sweet relief.) Drop a little on the bottom of your loved one's pillow or even on the bottom of the feet. It will help to increase serotonin and reduct cortisol. Let me know what you think.

Wild Orange – The Mood Booster 🍊
We all know that ADHD & AUTISM come with some emotional highs and lows. One minute, it’s a brilliant idea; the next minute, it’s a complete meltdown. Wild orange is like a ray of sunshine in a bottle, helping to uplift moods and promote a positive atmosphere. Diffuse it or apply it topically, and watch the energy in the room shift. (You might even start to feel like you've got your life together. And if not, at least the air smells nice.) You can add this to lavender or peppermint in a diffuser too - just to change it up.

Frankincense – The Grounder 🌍
Family survival with ADHD & AUTISM can leave you feeling like you’re floating in a sea of distractions. Enter frankincense, the grounding oil that helps promote mental clarity and focus while calming anxious energy. If you’re all over the place (who isn’t?), frankincense can bring you back to Earth. And the best part? It’s amazing for everyone, from kids to the grown-ups who really just need to adult for once. Often I suggest if ever in doubt which oil to use - use Frankie. He is the king of oils and supports cellular function as well. For some oils a great application is along the spine from the base upward to the neck. I usually suggest trying this as the central nervous system is along this region of the body and when an oil is applied there it will penetrate the whole system of the body right through to the brain. I use a carrier oil to make a smoother and tender swipe along the spine. The kids love it too.
Question for you: When’s the last time you felt “present” in a moment, without your mind jumping to the next 12 things? What would it feel like to just… be?
